Genesis - Selling England By The Pound

Selling England by the Pound is the fifth album by the British group Genesis, published in 1973.
The album title is a verse of the opening song Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. Peter Gabriel, author of the text, based it on a poster of the British Labour Party, who denounced this expression the "fire sale" of the country to mere financial and economic interests. Far from being explicitly politicized, texts of almost the entire album are loosely centered on the theme, very dear especially to Peter Gabriel, the conflict hypocritical - in the english subconscious - between austerity of tradition, often confined to the appearances and miseries. Surely one of the most representative albums of progressive rock, for many fans one of the best in history (although for me the previous albums were better), even here Genesis show their spirit and symphonic art, and have left us a nice trip to do.

Selling England by the Pound è il quinto album del gruppo inglese dei Genesis, pubblicato nel 1973. Il titolo dell'album è un verso del brano di apertura Dancing With The Moonlit Knight. Peter Gabriel, autore del testo, lo trasse da un manifesto del Partito Laburista inglese, che con tale espressione denunciava la "svendita" del Paese a meri interessi finanziari ed economici^. Lungi dall'essere esplicitamente politicizzati, i testi di quasi tutto l'album sono vagamente incentrati sul tema, già caro soprattutto a Peter Gabriel, del conflitto ipocrita - nel subconscio inglese - fra austerità della tradizione, spesso confinata alle sole apparenze, e miserie contemporanee. Sicuramente uno degli album più rappresentativi del rock progressivo, per molti appassionati uno dei migliori della storia (anche se per me gli album precedenti erano migliori), anche qua i Genesis fanno vedere il loro spirito sinfonico ed artistico, e ci hanno lasciato un bel viaggio da fare.
